From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. "Three Lions" has topped the Official Vodafone Big Top 40 chart following England's win against Sweden in the World Cup.

The song was written for Euro 96, held in England, by comedians Frank Skinner and David Baddiel - hosts of the BBC’s lads’ mag comedy show Fantasy Football (1994-96) - alongside Ian Broudie of Britpop outfit The Lightning Seeds.

The track climbed 32 places in the chart to surpass last week's number one, Solo by Clean Bandit and Demi Lovato, in the Vodafone-sponsored rundown, which is separate from the Official Charts Company's weekly chart and, furthermore, claims to reflect the consumption of music in the UK in real time.

England's victory over Sweden in the quarter-final game on Saturday afternoon now sees them advance to the semi-finals, where they'll play Croatia on Wednesday.

"Three Lions" transformed into a national phenomenon when England beat Scotland 2-0 at Wembley on 15 June 1996 and continued to ring amongst chanting fans, though recent disappointments against Uruguay and Iceland had seen it fall somewhat out of favour.

Until now, as the track entered the chart last week at number 33.

"What an incredible day! It's only right that Three Lions is number one on the chart," Marvin Humes, Big Top 40 presenter said. "Our boys in Russia are doing us so proud. The nation has come together and hopefully this is only the beginning of the celebrations."
