From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Robert Smith has gone viral with a stunningly deadpan interview, which he gave as The Cure was being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on Friday night.

The Cure are among the hall’s 2019 class of inductees, along with Stevie Nicks, Janet Jackson, Def Leppard, The Zombies, Radiohead and Roxy Music.

At one point during the evening at Brooklyn’s Barclays Centre, Smith chatted with an interviewer who asked him just how thrilled he was to be there.

“Congratulations The Cure, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees 2019, are you as excited as I am?” the interviewer asked.

Smith, who kept a straight face throughout the interview, simply responded: “Um, by the sounds of it, no.”

The interviewer laughed and asked him: “Oh, no, what are we going to do?”

Smith continued: “I’m sure we’ll get there eventually. It’s a bit early, isn’t it?”

The segment has drawn attention on Twitter, where many viewers have deemed it “priceless” and “hilarious”.

During his induction speech, Smith made sure to thank the band’s fans and “everyone who bought a record”.
