Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Cyndi Lauper, Troye Sivan, Rufus Wainwright and many more will sing during an online concert supporting LGBT+ nightlife during the coronavirus pandemic.
The event is organised by the Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative, the charitable organisation of the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar and national historic landmark in New York City.
It will air live online on 23 April at 8pm ET/5pm PT (1am on 24 April in the UK).
Viewers will be able to tune it via the World of Wonder YouTube channel.
Michelle Visage and Tyler Oakley will take on hosting duties.
In addition to Lauper, Sivan, and Wainwright, the event will include performances and appearances by Alan Cumming, Allie X, Betty Who, Carlie Hanson, Darren Hayes, Dave Mizzoni, Greyson Chance, Issac Dunbar, John Cameron Mitchell, Kim Petras, Kristin Chenoweth, Leland, Lorna Luft, Matt Rogers, MUNA, Nina West, Our Lady J, Pabllo Vittar, Peppermint, Shoshana Bean, Todrick Hall, TUCKER, and VINCINT.
“I think this pandemic has made it even more clear just how vulnerable some of our communities actually are,” Erich Bergen, who’s executive-producing the concert, told Variety.
“We are coming together to respond to this crisis in a collaborative way, through music, which is the great unifier.”
The concert will serve as a fundraiser for those in the LGBT+ nightlife industry who have found themselves in need due to the coronavirus crisis.
Money will be distributed in the form of grants to US residents who have worked for at least 12 months in LGBT+ nightlife and for whom it is a main source of income.
Potential recipients can apply for grants online. Donations can be made here.
