Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Sam Smith has scored number one on both the official singles chart and the official albums chart.

His Comic Relief collaboration with John Legend, "Lay Me Down", entered the charts straight at number one.

They sold over 105,000 copies according to the Official Charts Company. It is Smith's fourth number one in less than two years, and Legend's first UK number one.

Proceeds from the track have contributed towards the £78,082,988 raised by Comic Relief so far this year.

It knocked "King" by Years & Years down to number two after a brief one week spell at the top of the chart.

Flo Rida featuring Sage The Gemini had a new entry at number three with their track "GDFR", while Ellie Goulding's "Love Me Like You Do" fell two places to number four.

Rihanna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney fell two places to number five with their track "FourFive Seconds".

Sam Smith knocked Noel Gallagher and his band High Flying Birds off the top spot in this week's Official Albums Chart.

His debut album In The Lonely Hour is in the top spot for an eighth week, making it the first album by a male solo artist to achieve six different spells at number one in Official Chart history.

In The Lonely Hour was streamed 3,600 times over the past seven days, and finished over 12,000 chart sales ahead of midweek leader Madonna, who scored this week's highest new entry with Rebel Heart.
