From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The Who’s Roger Daltrey says that Elton John “got a***y” during a long-standing row over charity gigs in 2018.

Daltrey alleged in 2018 that the “Rocket Man” singer-songwriter had declined to appear at the Teenage Cancer Trust benefit concerts he had organised.

He claimed that he had performed at events in aid of John’s charity “three times”, but the act was not reciprocated.

At the time, a representative for John described the singer as “slightly perplexed by his claims”, stating that each of the three times Daltrey had contact John, “prior commitments meant Elton was unfortunately unable to take part”.

Furthermore, John’s representative said that “no one here has any recollection of Roger performing at any Elton John AIDS Foundation events ‘three times’ either, which makes it all the stranger”.

Talking to the Daily Mirror, Daltrey has now addressed the feud again, saying that he “wasn’t making a big deal out of it, but then Elton got arsey about it”.

“I’ve had the same number 40 years. But when you get to Elton’s status as a monstrous, massive star… it’s not easy to get hold of these guys.”

The artist did however re-affirm his desire for John to perform at one of his TCT gigs.

“I’ve done a couple for his Aids charities and foundation,” he said. “Without the support of teens, neither Elton nor The Who would have had the careers or lives they have had.”

The Independent has contacted John’s representatives for comment.
