From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Rita Ora discovered the perils of relying on your Twitter followers – even if you have almost four million of them.

The “I Will Never Let You Down” singer tweeted today that she would release her new single on Monday if she received 100,000 retweets.

The 23-year-old wrote: “Dropping my new song on Monday if this gets 100,000 retweets.”

But it was more trick than treat for Ora. After receiving less than 2,000 retweets by this afternoon and, perhaps pre-empting failure, the singer deleted the tweet.

However, the stealthy move didn’t go unnoticed by fans. One user tweeted: “So we’re not getting [the] new single?”

And another added: “Will you release the new single even if we don't reach the target? I think you're just teasing us.”

Only Monday will tell if Ora will go ahead with the release – but at least she can console herself with her burgeoning film career.

The singer is set to star in forthcoming erotic movie Fifty Shades of Grey as Mia, the sister of Christian Grey.

Based on EL James’ best-selling trilogy, the movie is scheduled for release on Valentine’s Day.
