This election is still a dead heat, according to most polls. In a fight with such wafer-thin margins, we need reporters on the ground talking to the people Trump and Harris are courting. Your support allows us to keep sending journalists to the story.

The Independent is trusted by 27 million Americans from across the entire political spectrum every month. Unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock you out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. But quality journalism must still be paid for.

Mumford and Sons will join Coldplay to headline Radio 1’s Big Weekend next month, with Biffy Clyro, Jess Glynne and The Weekend among other newly confirmed acts.

This year’s extravaganza is happening at Powderham Castle near Exeter on the weekend of 28-29 May and is Europe’s biggest free music event.

Music lovers were given the chance to enter a ballot for tickets earlier this month, with 25,000 tickets available for each day of the event.

Scott Mills revealed the full line-up on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show on Monday morning.

The long list of performers includes Wolf Alice, Bastille, Ellie Goulding, Jake Bugg, Meghan Trainor, Bring Me the Horizon, Chvrches, Craig David, The Last Shadow Puppets, Iggy Azalea, The 1975, Years and years, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Kygo, Jack Garratt and Skepta.

Mumford and Sons will be playing the Big Weekend for the first time. “We’ve got a lot of catching up to do,” said frontman Marcus Mumford. “I wanna make up for it with five years worth of riders. We’re really excited, thanks for inviting us, it’s going to be great.”

The Big Weekend traditionally takes place in areas that do not usually attract big music events, with priority given to those living nearby. Recent festivals have been held in Norwich, Londonderry and Glasgow.
