It looks a lot like Spotify

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

I can’t remember who it was, but someone ages ago predicted that piracy was going to pose an even bigger threat when it managed to mimic the user experience of a legitimate streaming service.

This is very much now the case, with Popcorn Time proving a popular (and elusive to authorities) service that lets you stream film and TV for free with the slickness of a Netflix interface.

Now Aurous has been created, which does the same but for music. It’s skin looks a lot like Spotify’s (see above).

I doubt people will be cancelling their monthly subscriptions straight away though, as Aurous’ music library is still quite limited at the moment, plus it’s lacking in functionalities like sorting by album, artist and playlist.

It could well improve over time though, and there’s already competition out there, with TorrentTunes offering a similar service.

Back in August, Popcorn Time shut down only to be started back up by a new team of developers endorsed by the old ones.
