Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The Clash clinched the God-Like Genius award at the annual NME Carling Awards last night two months after Joe Strummer, the band's frontman, died from a heart attack at his Somerset home.

The surviving members of the group, Mick Jones – who also produced the best new band, The Libertines – Paul Simonon and Topper Headon collected the honour at the awards ceremony at the Hammersmith Palais, London.

The recognition comes weeks before the release of a compilation of the punk pioneers' finest music, The Essential Clash.

The ceremony saw Coldplay and Oasis win two categories each. Coldplay's album A Rush of Blood to the Head was voted best album of the year by the music magazine and in a separate vote by readers.

But Oasis still managed to beat Coldplay to be named the UK's best band. They also picked up the artist of the year award. They were beaten to the best live band title by The Datsuns while the prize for the sexiest man went to Chris Martin of Coldplay, who is dating actress Gwyneth Paltrow.

Polyphonic Spree walked off with the F*** Me! award for innovation, beating The Neptunes, The Streets and Interpol. And The Streets – as Mike Skinner calls himself – was also beaten to the best solo artist award by Ryan Adams.

The Vines won the award for the best single and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club scooped best video for "Whatever Happened To My Rock 'n' Roll".

The Osbournes, the hit television show about Ozzy Osbourne and his family, won the best TV show prize with Osbourne named hero of the year. His son, Jack, won the worst haircut award.
