Phoebe Bridgers releases ‘Saviour Complex’ video directed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge and starring Paul Mescal
Normal People star befriends a dog and steals a car in new video
Phoebe Bridgers has dropped a music video for her track “Saviour Complex”, directed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge and starring Paul Mescal.
The black and white video, released on Facebook, shows the Normal People star befriending a dog on a beach and stealing a car. Bridgers appears in several scenes as the “saviour complex”, driving by and playing a hotel clerk.
In an interview with Rolling Stone last summer, Bridgers revealed she is a fan of Waller-Bridge. “I want to normalise personhood,” she said. “I feel like Phoebe Waller-Bridge has done that really well. She’s normalising being regular, doing stuff that everybody does like masturbating and stealing s***."
Joking about their similar names, she added: “I think it’s literally more of a stumbling on the name. People who half know who I am and half know who she is, morphing us. I love it. I love any association. She’s so cool.”
Mescal previously starred in the Rolling Stones’ video for “Scarlet”.
The track “Saviour Complex” appears on Bridgers’ latest album, Punisher.
The album was awarded four stars by The Independent’s critic, Alexandra Pollard, who wrote that the “fantastic, fatalistic” record “has the effect of a particularly pummelling massage”.
