Spears has been involved in a legal tussle in recent months over her conservatorship, which has been in place since 2008. The conservatorship means that decisions about her lifestyle and finances are under the control of a court-appointed guardian.
Hilton, who was photographed partying with Spears throughout 2006, said that the star’s treatment is “not fair”.
“It breaks my heart that people have so much control over her,” Hilton told The Sunday Times. “It’s not fair to be an adult and be treated like a child. I can’t imagine having to live my life like that.”
Hilton has consistently praised Spears in the years since they were last photographed together. She has not, however, maintained good feelings about Lindsay Lohan.
In one notorious photograph from 2006, Hilton, Spears and Lohan were pictured squashed into the front seats of Hilton’s car, with The New York Post running the image on their front page the following day along with the headline “Bimbo Summit”.
“She’s beyond,” Hilton said about Lohan. “I want nothing to do with her. Bad vibes.”
Last week (21 August), a Los Angeles court decided that Spears’s conservatorship will remain in place until February 2021, with her father Jamie maintaining control over his daughter’s affairs.
A fan movement known as #FreeBritney continues to reject the conservatorship and lobby for the star’s personal and professional freedom. In early August, Jamie Spears called the campaign “a joke” and said he is tired of speculation that his daughter is being exploited.
