From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Prince is to be honoured with his own official shade of purple by the Pantone Color Institute, it has been announced.

Prince was associated with the colour purple throughout his career, from his album Purple Rain to the clothes he wore, and was often referred to as 'the purple one'.

Love Symbol #2 is named after the late artist's logo and his custom-made Yamaha piano. The announcement was made a few months after the 30th anniversary deluxe edition of Purple Rain was released.

Prince's most iconic looks

Laurie Pressman, vice-president of the Pantone Color Institute, said: "We are honoured ot have worked on the delelopment of Love Symbol #2, a distinctive new purple shade in memory of Prince, 'the purple one'.

"A musical icon known for his artistic brilliance, Love Symbol #2 is emblematic of Prince's distinctive style. Long associated with the purple family, Love Symbol #2 enables Prince's unique purple shade to be consistently replicated and maintain the same iconic status as the man himself."

Troy Carter, entertainment adviser to Prince's estate, said: "The colour purple was synonymous with who Prince was and will always be. This is an incredible way for his legacy to live on forever."

Prince died in 2016, age 57, from an accidental fentanyl overdose.
