Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

As Hollywood’s finest await the outcome of the Oscars nominations announcement, it’s time to consider who we hope that Academy will plump for this year.

The Revenant, Spotlight and Bridge of Spies are strong frontrunners for gongs but there are a number of outliers we want to take home little gold men at the ceremony on Sunday 28 February.

Alicia Vikander deserves a double nod for Ex Machina and The Danish Girl, while Idris Elba’s fearsome turn in Beasts of Nation, Rooney Mara’s beautifully understated performance in Carol and Charlize Theron’s serious ass-kicking in Mad Max: Fury Road should also be recognised.

Carol, The Big Short and The Revenant are among our favourite movies from the past year, with Mad Max: Fury Road and Room also getting lots of love from the team.

Alejandro G Inarritu looks set to take Best Director for The Revenant but our fingers are firmly crossed that Todd Haynes gets a look in for Carol.

Check out the nominations list as we’d like to see it:
