From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

One Direction are already working on material for their new album, according to band member Niall Horan.

The 21-year-old pop star made the announcement to his 21.9 million followers on Twitter today, posting, “Had a sit down last night with the label, started organising our writing sessions for the next album! F**k yeaaaahhhh! Can't wait!”

This will be 1D’s first record without Zayn Malik after he left the group last week, midway through their On The Road Again world tour, citing stress. His last performance as part of One Direction was on 18 March in Hong Kong.

In an exclusive interview with The Sun, the 22-year-old singer indicated that the door has been left open for him to return to the band in the future. Zayn also said that he didn’t intend to leave of the limelight completely.

He is reportedly working with music producer Naughty Boy on his first solo album on Simon Cowell’s Syco record label.

Following his decision to leave the group Zayn said, “And I feel like I’m doing what’s right — right by myself and right by the boys, so I feel good.”

He admitted that he “wasn’t happy” for a while but was continuing for the sake of the group.

“It’s not that I’ve turned my back on them or anything, it’s just that I just can’t do that anymore because it’s not real to me,” he explained.

One Direction were formed on the X Factor in 2010 by Cowell and guest judge Nicole Scherzinger, the band came third in the competition behind Matt Cardle and Rebecca Ferguson. They have released four albums to date as a five-piece.

The group are continuing on the next leg of their On The Road Again Tour.
