From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Mumford & Sons may have been dubbed the Muse of folk music for their ability to ratchet up sales in the US and to divide opinion. But it looks as if the real Muse is set to knock Mumfords off the UK album chart.

The rockers from Devon have sold nearly 70,000 copies of their sixth studio album The 2nd Law, threatening to topple Mumford & Son's Babel, which has been number 1 in both the UK and US album charts this week.

Muse could take the top spot in the UK Official Album Chart this Sunday 7 October despite Babel being hailed as the fastest-selling album of 2012 having shifted over 159,000 last week.

One Direction and Rihanna are going head-to-head for the top spot in the Official Singles Chart, with sales of 1D's "Take Me Home" inching ahead of "Diamonds" by a couple of hundred.
