Maroon 5 are set to make their debut at the MTV Video Music Awards later this month, the band has announced.

The Los Angeles group will play a track, possibly “Maps”, from their forthcoming fifth album, V, alongside the likes of Usher, 5 Seconds of Summer and Ariana Grande.

“We are so excited about our upcoming new album and to be part of the great VMA line-up this year,” said frontman Adam Levine in a statement.

“It’s out first time doing the show and we are thrilled to be on it performing out new single.”

Levine also revealed his pre-gig ritual. “I like to keep it raw, exciting, get your blood pumping, and then we run out there,” he said, before dropping a Dire Straits reference, “I want my MTV!”

Despite winning big at the awards ceremony in past years, the “Moves Like Jagger” stars have never before taken to the stage as performers.

In 2012, they won Best Pop Video for “Payphone, in 2007 they took home the Best Group prize and in 2004, they beat Kanye West, Yellowcard and Jet to Best New Artist. Maroon 5 are not nominated for an award this time around.

More performers are expected to be announced in due course, with Taylor Swift among those rumoured to appear.

Beyoncé leads the 2014 nominations with eight, followed by Eminem and Iggy Azalea’s seven.

The top category of Video of the Year will be fought out between Beyoncé’s “Drunk in Love”, Pharrell Williams’ “Happy”, Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball”, Sia’s “Chandelier” and Azalea’s “Fancy”.

Music fans can vote online for the winners, who will be announced live on Sunday 24 August from the Forum in Inglewood, California.
