Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. Some of the best musical moments are borne from random discovery. Previously, that might have been via something overheard in a record shop. Or, say, seeing a band you don’t know live. Though, that option didn’t exist for Andy Bellis this week.
Bellis went to see The Vaccines at Venue Cymru in Llandudno on Monday night but, before he could get in, claims he was pulled from the queue and asked to name the band’s singer, two albums and some songs. He failed and promptly had his ticket taken. (Venue Cymru has said that it was making random checks on people to thwart pickpockets).
That seems a bit harsh, but perhaps a more rigorous approach to gig entry is due. How about asking people: “Do you have a large rucksack?”, “Do you have tall hair?” and “Are you so drunk you will fall into people?”. If your answer if “Yes”, you can wait outside with the people who don’t know the singer’s name.
(Justin Young, by the way).
