Some of the best musical moments are borne from random discovery. Previously, that might have been via something overheard in a record shop. Or, say, seeing a band you don’t know live. Though, that option didn’t exist for Andy Bellis this week.
Bellis went to see The Vaccines at Venue Cymru in Llandudno on Monday night but, before he could get in, claims he was pulled from the queue and asked to name the band’s singer, two albums and some songs. He failed and promptly had his ticket taken. (Venue Cymru has said that it was making random checks on people to thwart pickpockets).
That seems a bit harsh, but perhaps a more rigorous approach to gig entry is due. How about asking people: “Do you have a large rucksack?”, “Do you have tall hair?” and “Are you so drunk you will fall into people?”. If your answer if “Yes”, you can wait outside with the people who don’t know the singer’s name.
(Justin Young, by the way).
