From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Lady Gaga will release her new single in August, according to a message on her official Facebook page.

The track, from the upcoming album Artpop, will be out on 19 August, with the LP following in November.

There will also be a smartphone and tablet app accompanying the album, enabling fans to download extra videos, music, chat options and games.

The controversial pop diva described the app as a “musical and visual engineering system that combines music, art, fashion, and technology with a new interactive worldwide community - the auras”.

It’s creation follows the promise of a "multimedia experience" the star made to fans last year.

“You inspired me to create something that communicated with images, because YOU do, YOU communicate with me and each other…I'm hoping you will all continue to grow together and stay connected through your creativity,” she said.

Gaga is well known as a social networking expert, running her own site Little Monster and tweeting prolifically. But earlier this week she shut down her Twitter account, presumably as a warm-up for announcements and publicity around her forthcoming releases.

The account is still dormant.

The 27-year-old was forced to cancel many concerts on her Born This Way Ball world tour earlier in the year following hip surgery. She’d been suffering from synovitis, an inflammation of the joints, but is now said to be fully recovered.

Artpop will be Lady Gaga's third album, following her debut The Fame and Born This Way. Both the album and app will be available to pre-order from 1 September.
