LadBaby beat Mariah Carey to score third consecutive Christmas No 1

Mark and Roxanne Hoyle will donate funds raised by the single to a food bank charity

Mariah Carey and Wham! were beaten in the race for this year’s Christmas No 1 by LadBaby, who scored the hit single for the third consecutive year in a row.  

Nottinghamshire couple Mark and Roxanne Hoyle, the YouTube stars and charity campaigners, topped the charts with their take on Journey’s 1981 song “Don’t Stop Believin’”, naming it “Don’t Stop Me Eatin’”.  

As is tradition, the song referenced the couple’s love of sausage rolls but also the pandemic, with lyrics such as: “When my family finally meet. / We’ll share a foot-long through a plastic sheet.”

As with their previous singles, “Don’t Stop Me Eatin’” raised money for the food bank charity the Trussell Trust. The Hoyles have themselves faced food poverty, and spoke earlier this month a time when they lived on £20 a week for food.

They achieved their first No 1 in 2018, with their cover of Starship’s 1985 “We Built This City”.  

In 2019 they topped the charts at Christmas for a second time with “I Love Sausage Rolls”, based on Joan Jett’s version of “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll”.  

Addressing this year’s win, LadBaby thanked fans for their support and said: “Merry Christmas to everyone and don’t stop believin’ – that things are going to get better. 2021 is going to be better for everyone.”

Elsewhere in the charts, Mariah Carey dropped to No 2 after reigning at the top of the charts for the two weeks before Christmas.  

Essex punk band The Kunts managed to reach No 5 with their 56-second track “Boris Johnson is a F***ing C***”, while Wham!’s “Last Christmas”, which still has yet to reach No 1 in the charts, hit No 3.
