Kurt Cobain documentary: First trailer for Montage of Heck debuts online - watch

The film will be released in the UK later this spring

The first trailer for the authorised Kurt Cobain documentary, Montage of Heck, has debuted online.

The trailer shows footage of Cobain as a toddler as it follows his life from a troubled teenager to a young man who goes on to have worldwide success with grunge band Nirvana.

The two and a half minute trailer also shows the personal pain Cobain suffered after his parents divorced when he was seven, and his desire to forge a family of his own with wife Courtney Love and daughter Frances Bean.

Love is seen saying “we were all he had” as home videos of Cobain in the bath with Frances Bean as a toddler appear on screen.

Bean has served as an executive producer on the film, which will be the first fully authorised account of the late Nirvana star’s life.

The documentary, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, will open in UK cinemas this spring.

It will be broadcast on HBO in the US on 4 May after showing at SXSW music and film festival later this month.

Montage of Heck is named after one of Cobain’s mixtapes, which was circulated widely online in 2014.

The documentary will also feature a previously unheard 12-minute long acoustic Kurt Cobain track, the film’s director Brett Morgen revealed earlier this month.

Nirvana bandmate Dave Grohl does not appear in the documentary. The drummer was interviewed too late to be edited into the current film.

“We had a locked print and trying to re-edit a film with a new interview in 10 days is kind of difficult. This is the picture I wanted – I didn’t want there to be a lot of people in the film,” Morgen told Billboard.

However, the director said he would not rule out a future edit of the film that could feature input from Grohl.

“I hope we’ll see a version [with the Grohl interview] some time,” he said.
