Kanye West's 'Power' and Kendrick Lamar's 'Backseat Freestyle' blend seamlessly

99% of mash-ups are trash, doing a disservice to both tracks and feeling dissonant and amateurish.

But, occasionally, along comes a pairing that makes so much sense it's as if the songs were somehow spiritually paired when they were separately written.

Britney Spears' 'Everytime' and the Twin Peaks theme is one such case, and another emerged today with DJ Mariano's 'Power Freestyle', a collision of Kanye West's 'Power' and Kendrick Lamar's 'Backseat Freestyle'.

'Backseat' was an ode to teenage confidence on Good Kid Maad City, and laid over the top of the brash 'Power' beat, Kendrick's vocals bounce and roll perfectly, as if written specifically for that beat - even the high-speed closing verse works in its own way, its aggressiveness running at odds with the track winding down.

"I did a lot of work here," Mariano explained on Reddit. "The acapella sounded really bad and I'm glad I managed to make it sit well. For the verse sections, I cut into different parts of the instrumental. You can tell when Kendrick goes into his first verse that the instrumental is aligned with the last verse section from POWER, and the second verse is an earlier section from the same part. For the most part, anytime Kendrick goes from verse-hook-verse-etc. the instrumental starts playing from somewhere else."

He put the track on Bandcamp with a 'name your price' option, one fan giving him $60 they were so impressed with the remix.
