Kanye West 'Fade' music video choreographer explains Teyana Taylor's 'cat face'

'It really is about her coming into her fierceness'

This year’s VMAs was a relatively uneventful affair compared to the previous few years. In summary: Beyoncé dominated with an incredible performance, Drake fawned after Rihanna, and Kanye West had four minutes of unfiltered talking.

The rapper also presented his latest internet-breaking music video for the song “Fade”, featuring fellow GOOD Music artist Teyana Taylor dancing in a gym.

Things end on a slightly odd note, with Taylor donning bizarre lion makeup, lying on her husband, daughter close by, surrounded by sheep.

Choreographer Jae Blaze has detailed what the ending means, telling Pitchfork: “The vision behind that was how amazing Teyana is, and how she's been on the rise, and how she's working, and you are now seeing her blossom into this fierce lioness, this fierce cat. She has worked her way into that, and she's in a great position right now in her life.

“She has her family. She's being held down by her amazing husband. She has a beautiful daughter. You know, the lioness always protects her baby. I think it really is about her coming into her fierceness. And that's where she is in her life right now. She is blossoming.”

Sakiya Sandifer] told me there’s three keys to keeping people impoverished: that’s taking away their esteem, taking away their resources, and taking away their role models. My role models are artists, merchants. There’s less than ten that I can name in history. Truman. Ford. Hughes. Disney. Jobs. West.
