From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Johnny Depp plans to return to directing with a documentary of The Rolling Stone's guitarist Keith Richards, announced The Playlist (theplaylist.blogspot.com) on February 2. The actor revealed his plans during an interview with Serbian magazine Politika.

Depp's previous directing efforts include the 1997 Native American drama The Brave, starring Marlon Brando.

"Now that I'm wiser, and that enough time has passed, I can experience directing again," Depp told Politika, according to The Playlist's translation. "Already next week I'll start working on a Keith Richards documentary. ... I'm very touched that Keith agreed to show up in front of my cameras."

Depp's portrayal of Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribean films was said to have been inspired by Richards, and the now 66-year-old guitarist made his acting debut as Sparrow's father Captain Teague in 2007's Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.
