From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

There's something odd, something simultaneously humble and yet creepy about a celebrity commenting on another's Instagram.

It's one thing if it's a separate post, an overt and obvious message to them, but when their name is buried in the comments section among other users it always conjures the lonely image of them sat on a sofa scrolling idly through their feed.

One such social media oddity took place today when Lorde posted a photo of herself on a balcony in a white jumpsuit alongside the caption: "in oslo looking like a president's wife or some shit".

An eagle-eyed fan spotted the comment, from chef Jamie Oliver's official account: "Your funny babe hope your well j" (sic).

It was pretty harmless, but clearly the combination of bad grammar, perfunctory compliment and unlikely celebrity pairing amused onlookers.

"Double date between Lorde and Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay with Charli XCX is def in the works," one wrote.
