From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

i_o, the producer and DJ who worked with Grimes on her 2020 track “Violence”, had died at the age of 30.

The artist, real name Garrett Falls Lockhart, died on Monday 23 November, a post on his official Twitter account announced. His cause of death has not been made public at this stage.

“This extremely talented spirit taught us that even if nothing matters, you can still lead with love,” the statement read.

“Garrett’s truth and soul lives on through the music he shared. Rest in peace, Garrett. We love you.”

The LA-based musician had released his latest remix just last week, a reworked version of trance song “Castles in the Sky” by Ian Van Dahl.

He also released the single “In My Head” earlier this year and signed to dance music label Armada Music.

i_o’s best known work is on the track “Violence” from Grimes’ latest album Miss Anthropocene.

Many DJs and producers have paid tribute to i_o on social media. DeadMau5 – whose Mau5trap label the artist had previously released music on – tweeted: “Going to miss you my dude, it was a real pleasure working with you and watching you succeed… may you find rest, and let your music live on into eternity.”

British DJ FuntCase added: “i_o was possibly the only dude in America who had the authentic deeply dry af humour of an Englishman.”

Grimes is yet to respond to the news.
