From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Ice Spice has responded to fans naming her the “People’s Princess”.

The term became associated with the late Princess Diana after former UK prime minister Tony Blair used the sobriquet following her death in 1997.

In a new interview with Billboard, the New York rapper spoke about her meteoric rise to fame and how she became associated with the royal.

“I saw all of my supporters being like, ‘She’s the People’s Princess! She’s Princess Diana!’” Ice Spice – real name Isis Gaston – remembered.

“At first, I was confused. I was like, ‘Um, Princess Diana? Out of everybody?’ But [then] I was like, ‘F*** it, she’s iconic.’”

The rapper doubled down on the comparison in her 2023 single featuring Nicki Minaj, titled “Princess Diana”.

“When we come out, it look like Princess Diana on the street,” she says in the song.

Ice Spice rose to prominence in late 2022 with her hit “Munch”.

She made her Met Gala debut after reportedly receiving an invite to be the special guest of Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour at the annual event.

Her collaboration with PinkPantheress on “Boy’s a Liar Pt 2” has already gone platinum and she was also recently announced as the newest ambassador for Kim Kardashian’s shapewear brand Skims.
