From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Punk has consistently epitomised the disaffected youth, a subculture filled with DIY bands clashing against the system.

Whether Green Day can really still be called a punk band remains debatable but their latest stand against President-elect Donald Trump is a definitive punk moment.

While performing at the American Music Awards, which featured performances by the likes of Lady Gaga and Sting, singer Billie Joe Armstrong decided to make a stand.

Taking to the stage to perform the single “Bang Bang” off the album Revolution Radio, the band broke out into a chant, shouting “No Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA.”

The band has made numerous statements against Trump over the last year. Earlier this month, at the MTV music awards, the band changed the lyrics of 2004 single “American Idiot” to “Can you hear the sounds of hysteria / The subliminal Trump America.”

In an interview with Kerrang!, Armstrong compared Trump to Hitler, saying: “He just said, ‘You have no options and I’m the only one, and I’m going to take care of it myself.’ I mean, that’s f***ing Hitler, man!”

Meanwhile, Trump recently started Tweeting about his distaste for Saturday Night Live, saying the show should be retired after mocking him. Alec Baldwin used the social media platform to shoot down the President-elect once more.
