Jay Z calls out Grammys for snubbing Beyonce for Album of the Year

The 2024 Grammy Awards took place on Sunday 4 February, with female artists dominating the major categories on a night dubbed ‘Year of the Women’.

Taylor Swift won Album of the Year for the fourth time, setting a new record. Song of the Year went to Billie Eilish for “What Was I Made For?”, while Record of the Year was won by Miley Cyrus for “Flowers”.

Earlier in the night, Swift took the opportunity to announce a brand new album, The Tortured Poets Department.

The ceremony’s live performances were also dominated by women, with legendary singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell drawing an emotional reaction and a standing ovation. Other performers included Dua Lipa and Tracy Chapman, who memorably dueted with Luke Combs on a duet version of her hit “Fast Car”.

SZA had led the nominations with nine nods, and ended up winning three.

As awards ceremonies go, this was a night that truly had it all. Even a surprise cameo from Meryl Streep...

Jack Antonoff just won Producer of the Year (non-classical) and has thanked his longtime collaborator, Taylor Swift, for giving him a chance when no one else would.

“Taylor Swift kicked that f***ing door open for me, because when a lot of people were saying ‘yeah, we love it, now let’s get a producer to do it.... it’s gotta go to a big-name person... we did a song called ‘Out of the Woods’, she said, let’s mix this s***, so... Allison Russell teases Joni Mitchell performance

The Independent caught up with Allison Russell, who will play alongside Brandi Carlisle in Joni Mitchell’s first-ever Grammys performance later tonight.

She wasn’t allowed to say much, aside from the fact that Brandi would be joining her, but hoped people will “just be with us and sit in it and embrace the love”.

Russell won the Best American Roots Performance award for “Eve Was Black”. She’s also nominated for Best American Roots Song and Best Americana Album.

Dua Lipa kicks off the live show with an outstanding medley

We love the Brits representing at music’s biggest night - Dua Lipa is absolutely killing the first performance of the live show with a medley of songs including her Barbie hit “Dance the Night Away” and her brand new single, “Houdini”.

A reminder that Trevor Noah is our host for this evening, back for the fourth consecutive year.

This is already a Grammys ceremony for the ages

There’s so much happening already, I feel like this is shaping up to be one of the best Grammy Awards we’ve ever seen.

So far we’ve had Dua Lipa’s performance, and now a sublime duet of “Fast Car” between Tracy Chapman and Luke Combs, the latter who covered it last year.

Trevor Noah is killing it as host, and delighted Taylor Swift with an NFL-related joke that didn’t stink the place out (sorry Jo Koy). There are SO many stars here, from Meryl Streep to Beyonce and Jay Z.

Miley Cyrus has just won her first Grammy award for Best Pop Solo Performance for her summer hit “Flowers”.

Collecting the award from presenter Mariah Carey, Cyrus said: “This MC is going to stand next to that MC.”

“This is just too iconic, I just got stuck in the rain and traffic and thought I was going to miss this moment.”

Cyrus said she got sat in her lucky number three sat, before telling a story about a boy who couldn’t capture a butterfly, but once he stopped trying the butterfly landed on his nose.

“This song ‘Flowers’ is my butterfly,” she said.
