Nipsey Hussle has won his first Grammys posthumously.

The late rapper’s song “Racks in the Middle” took Best Rap Performance at the Staples Center ceremony.

Hussle was also recognised in the Best Rap/Sung Performance category for the title “Higher” with DJ Khaled and John Legend.

The artist, who was fatally shot in March last year, was honoured during the live telecast with a tribute performance from DJ Khaled, Legend, Meek Mill and others.

His family, including his brother, grandmother and his partner, actor Lauren London, accepted a first trophy on his behalf during the pre-telecast.

“Nip did it, not just for the awards, but for the people,” London said onstage.

Hussle was nominated for two other awards, including Best Rap Song, which he lost to J Cole and 21 Savage.

The Grammys typically hand out roughly 10 awards during the live show. Most of the 84 awards are given out before the live show. Lil Nas X, Beyonce and Lady Gaga all won early Grammys ahead of Sunday’s ceremony.

The pre-telecast ceremony, where most of the awards are handed out, opened with a brief remembrance of NBA star Kobe Bryant, who was killed earlier in the day in a helicopter crash in California.

Referring to the arena where Bryant played for the Los Angeles Lakers, Interim Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr said: “Since we are in his house, I would ask you to join me in a moment of silence.”
