Sir Paul McCartney has announced he will headline Glastonbury 2020 in arguably the most cryptic way of any artist to perform at the festival.

The former Beatle posted an image from his official Twitter account depicting composer Philip Glass, actor Emma Stone and the late Chuck Berry, leading fans to add: Glass, Stone and Berry = Glastonbury.

McCartney, who last played at Glastonbury in 2004, had been strongly rumoured for a spot on the Pyramid Stage next year, which will mark the 50th anniversary of the music festival.

He followed up the tweet by writing: “Hey Glasto – excited to be part of your Anniversary celebrations. See ya next summer!

Emily Eavis, the festival co-organiser, said: “IT’S REAL!! So excited. Having Paul McCartney coming back to headline the Pyramid next year is an absolute dream come true. There really was no one that we wanted more for the 50th anniversary.”

McCartney said in an interview in September: “We played there quite a long time ago so maybe it is time to go back. I don’t know. I’d have to put a few things in place

“It’s starting to become some remote kind of possibility. It’s definitely not fixed yet but people are starting to talk about it.”

The 77-year-old’s performance will follow the 50th anniversary celebrations of The Beatles album Abbey Road from earlier this year, and the release of his latest solo album Egypt Station in 2018.

Diana Ross was recently confirmed for the legend’s slot at Glastonbury 2020. Other artists rumoured for headline spots include Taylor Swift, Madonna and Kendrick Lamar.
