From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

A White House reporter unwittingly landed a music journalism holy grail at the weekend: an interview with Frank Ocean.

The musician, who generally shies away from the spotlight and hasn’t given an interview in nearly three years, wound up in an awkward, very reluctant Q&A with a lady covering Obama’s last White House state dinner, answering a string of questions before hurrying back to join his guest for the evening, his mother.

He was quizzed on his choice of footwear for the formal occasion (checkered Vans), whether he would consider endorsing a candidate (probably not) and what he was looking forward to most about the evening ahead (ugh, that classic red carpet question).

To this, Frank quite adorably responded: “Asking Obama if he had fun these last eight years.”

I sincerely hope he found a second to ask the POTUS this, and that Obama grabbed him the shoulder, misty eyed, and told him he’d had a ball.

Chance the Rapper also attended the dinner, but surprisingly not Kendrick Lamar, who has performed at the White House before and is one of the president’s favourite artists.
