From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Sir Elton John has reopened his feud with Madonna after branding her a "nightmare" and claiming her career in music is over after her "disaster" tour.

The 65-year-old musician, who has previously accused Madonna of lip-synching during her live shows, launched his latest attack on an Australian television show, Sunday Night.

He asked: "Why is she such a nightmare? Sorry, her career is over. Her tour has been a disaster and it couldn't happen to a bigger c***."

Madonna, 53, has received criticism during her current MDNA world tour after exposing her breast on stage and waving guns.

Sir Elton also took objection to Madonna's swipes at Lady Gaga. Madonna has implied on several occasions that Lady Gaga's hit "Born This Way" is a copy of her 1989 single "Express Yourself".

He added: "If Madonna had any common sense she would have made a record like Ray Of Light [Madonna's 1998 album] and stayed away from the dance stuff and just been a great pop singer and make great pop records, which she does brilliantly. But no, she had to go and prove... she looks like a f***ing fairground stripper. She's been horrible to Gaga."

Lady Gaga, a self-confessed Madonna fan, is godmother to Sir Elton's 19-month-old son, Zachary.

Sir Elton has topped the charts with an album of his 70s classics, remixed by dance producers PNAU. However, Madonna's MDNA album, which is an attempt to recapture contemporary dancefloor music, has sold poorly.
