From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Debbie Harry has said that she “was flattered” when David Bowie “pulled out his c**k” after she gave him some free drugs in 1977.

In her new memoir, Face It, the Blondie frontwoman recalled an incident while on tour with Bowie and Iggy Pop, in which she gave the pair some of her cocaine stash after they discovered their regular New York dealer had died. She then alleges that Bowie proceeded to expose himself to her.

“He pulled out his c**k, as if I was the official c**k checker,” Harry writes. “David’s size was notorious, of course, and he loved to pull it out for men and women. It was so... sexy.”

Harry elaborated further on the encounter while speaking to The Sunday Times, saying she “can only hope” that he meant it as a sign of gratitude.

“I guess he was trying to say thank you,” she continued. “It was very funny... I didn’t touch it. But I did think, well – very nice. I don’t know, it’s too bad you can’t ask him.”

Harry said that she didn’t mind the exposure, adding: “I guess I was sort of flattered, you know? He’s one of the great men that I admire in the music world, clearly a genius.”

Face It, published next week by HarperCollins, finds Harry recalling memories of her Blondie fame and encounters with figures including the New York Dolls, Phil Spector and the murderer Ted Bundy, who Harry has always insisted she was nearly killed by in the Seventies.

“People say he was in Florida at the time I was abducted [in New York],” she told the Sunday Times, “so they say my story’s been debunked. But I don’t really give a damn what they think. I just know what happened.”
