The “Believe” singer has long been vocal on social media about her political views, opposing Donald Trump during his presidency and appearing at multiple campaign rallies in support of Joe Biden.
On Saturday (10 April), Cher spoke out against lawmakers in Georgia, who critics say are trying to reduce the impact of minority voters by making it more difficult to cast a ballot.
“‘VOTER SUPPRESSION’,” Cher tweeted. “2 Words That Define Immoral Republican Pols. They Bring Jim Crow Back, Wrap Themselves In The [flag emoji] & Have Gone 2 ‘Whites Only’ 2 [stop sign emoji] BLK, ETHNIC,& POOR DEMS FROM VOTING,& WINNING.”
She continued: “IF THERE R NO DEMS 2 PROTECT, Gop WILL ACHIEVE THE DREAM THEY’VE [prayer hands emoji] 4. ‘WHITE SUPREMACY’.”
According to the new laws in place in Georgia, voters will have to present a state-issued ID when requesting an absentee ballot, while the number of drop boxes in the state and the times they’re available will also be limited.
Georgia played a critical role in last year’s election after narrowly voting for Biden in the presidential race. He was the first Democrat to win the state since 1992.
Last week, Cher apologised for a tweet about the trial of Derek Chauvin in which she suggested she could have prevented the death of George Floyd.
