Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Despite historically being an event filled with controversy, last night’s Brit awards (20 February) proved remarkably unremarkable. While Little Mix and Hugh Jackman offered theatrical performances, there were few stand-out moments as host Jack Whitehall kept proceedings going at an even – and arguably boring – pace.
Unfortunately, the selection of winners were also particularly dry. The 1975 took home the night’s most prestigious award, Album of the Year, for their 2018 record A Brief Enquiry into Online Relationships, beating Jorja Smith (Lost and Found), Florence + the Machine (High as Hope), Anne-Marie (Speak Your Mind) and George Ezra (Staying at Tamara’s). They were also named Best Group.
Matching their two wins was Calvin Harris, who won Best British Single for his collaboration with Dua Lipa, “One Kiss”, and Best Producer.
Elsewhere, perhaps the biggest shock was Tom Walker beating British Female winner Jorja Smith for Breakthrough Act. Walker was not nominated for British Male, with the award going instead to George Ezra.
Rounding off the British winners were Little Mix, who won Best Video for their track “Woman Like Me”, and Ed Sheeran, who was named British Success for the second year running.
Among the international winners were The Carters (Beyoncé and Jay-Z) who won Best International Group, Drake (Best International Male) and Ariana Grande (Best International Female).
Whitehall was on hand to rib the performers, calling George Ezra the “Prius of pop” and the “Milky Bar kid all grown up”. There were also a few jokes about Brexit, including: “There have been so many groups getting back together. First the Spice Girls, then Bros and now Westlife. Suddenly a hard border with Northern Ireland doesn’t sound so bad.”
Other performers on the night included P!nk, Sam Smith, Dua Lipa and The 1975.
