Britney Spears: Jamie Lynn Spears defends ‘strong, badass, unstoppable’ sister
‘You have no right to assume anything about my sister’, singer/songwriter said
Jamie Lynn Spears has spoken out in defence of her “badass” older sister Britney.
The “Hit Me Baby One More Time” singer’s conservatorship, which leaves the handling of her professional and personal affairs to specially-selected care providers, has resurfaced after her mother filed a legal request to be involved in her daughter’s finances.
On Tuesday (22 July), the younger Spears sibling seemingly addressed the matter as she shared a series of tweets about mental health from celebrities including Halsey and Maren Morris to her Instagram.
“If you deal with mental illness or care for someone dealing with mental illness, then you know how important it is to respect the situation with privacy for the person, and the family trying to protect their loved ones, no matter how it may appear to the public,” Spears wrote.
In the comments beneath the post, Spears hit back at a follower who asked why she didn’t speak about “her sister’s obvious mental illness”, responding: “You have no right to assume anything about my sister, and I have NO right to speak about HER health and personal matters.”
“She is a strong, badass, and unstoppable woman, and that’s the only thing that is OBVIOUS.”
Resharing the comment to her Instagram Story, she added: “Y’all know how I get about my family, just ask that neighbourhood lady who ran her loud mouth” – a reference to a 2009 paparazzi video in which a woman is seen shouting at both Spears sisters that “nobody wants [them] in this neighbourhood”. Jamie Lynn is then seen shouting back, “Well then move the f*** out!”
Spears also responded to a fan who asked her to speak out about her sister, replying: “I would never speak out just to clarify things to the public, when the person it pertains to does not want that to happen.
“I’d rather take all the hate than speak about someone else’s personal matter, that they want to be kept private.”
In May, Britney Spears’s conservatorship was extended by a judge until at least August. It was originally set up in 2008 and managed by her father, who stepped down in 2019.
