Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Bon Iver, Björk and Glastonbury headliners Foo Fighters are among the artists participating in the newly-announced 7-inches for Planned Parenthood campaign.
The initiative will see numerous artists come together to create 7" records, with the sales being donated to Planned Parenthood. The American healthcare organisation currently receives around $500 million (£400m) in federal funding annually, according to the New York Times, but has recently faced threats of defunding under Donald Trump's presidency.
Other famous creatives participating in the campaign including comedian Sarah Silverman (Wreck-It Ralph) and author Margaret Atwood (The Handmaid's Tale).
St. Vincent - who is making her directorial debut in new horror anthology XX - and John Legend will also be working to support the project, who can be seen covering Minnie Riperton’s "Lovin’ You" with the “help” of actor Zach Galifianakis (Birdman) in a new promotional comedy sketch.
The campaign message was posted to social media, which states: “Lawmakers with extreme views are working hard to shut down Planned Parenthood. If they succeed, millions of Americans will lose access to basic health services, including STD testing and treatment, birth control, and life-saving cancer screenings.
“7-inches for Planned Parenthood is a response to this threat. This curated series of 7-inch vinyl records is being made by a group of people who believe that access to health care is a public good that should be fiercely protected. Do we know there’s a joke in the name? We do. We hope the title evokes the rich history of 7-inch vinyl records as a medium for protest music and resistance.”
The singles will be released as part of a vinyl box set, though a date is yet to be revealed.
