Bill Wyman, former bassist for The Rolling Stones, has announced his first solo album in 32 years.

Back to Basics will be released on 22 June by Proper Records and will be made up of 13 tracks, eight of which are completely new songs.

“Initially I thought I’m a bit old for this but then I thought all the old blues musicians played till they dropped so why don’t I give it a go,” the bassist said of the release.

Wyman’s last solo album, the self-titled Bill Wyman, was released in 1982 and reached number 55 in the UK charts, with his two previous releases, Monkey Grip and Stone Alone, also charting in the US.

Since his last solo effort Wyman has played with The Rolling Stones, authored seven books, become a metal detecting expert – having released his own brand of metal detector – and founded Rhythm Kings.

Joining Wyman on Back to Basics will be long-time collaborator Terry Taylor, Mark Knopfler's colleague Guy Fletcher, Graham Broad and Robbie McIntosh. Andy Wright, best known for his work with Jeff Beck, will also receive a co-production credit.

According to the album's press release, Back to Basics is “unashamedly stripped back” and “wears its influences on its sleeve” - including those of Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen and JJ Cale.
