Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

UK singer Annabel Allum has been around for a couple of years, releasing music since 2016 via Killing Moon records, but it's this year that she's really coming into her own.

Following the release of her single "Beat The Birds" - a new favourite of Huw Stephens over on BBC Radio 1, she's dropped a brand new track called "Rascal" which you can hear first via The Independent.

Allum says of the track: "Rascael pinpoints a phase in time when it felt like no matter what I was doing, it wouldn't be alright. Trying to look after myself, the people close to me, the people around me, and never finding a balance in any of it.

"I would either give too much or nothing at all. I still do that. It's quite a sad song. Self-scrutiny, really. I guess I'm just still learning that it's OK to not be able to please everyone all the time."

Check it out below:

Allum's got a bit of a Kurt Cobain/early PJ Harvey thing going on which we love, with that scuzzy guitar and her brilliant voice - which goes from slightly aloof on "Beat the Birds" to a keening cry on "Rascal" - both are deeply affecting in their own way; both showcase a strong talent for songwriting.

"Rascal" is the second track from her upcoming new EP - she's also performing at The Great Escape festival in May.
