Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Alt-J have unveiled the first single "Hunger Of The Pine" taken from their new album This Is All Yours, a brooding, silken track that features a vocal sample from Miley Cyrus' Bangerz track "4x4".

The sample is used sparingly in the track, her "I'm the female devil" hook punctuating its crescendos.

"Hunger Of The Pine" was debuted on Zane Lowe's BBC Radio 1 show, with the band telling the DJ that it was one of the songs on the LP to be written after the departure of bassist Gwil Sainsbury.

"It came quite late really - a lot of songs were ideas we've been batting around over the two years we've been touring," keyboardist Gus Unger-Hamilton said.

He also gave a few more details as to why Sainsbury quit the band, adding: "He left right before we started making the album basically. He was not enjoying aspects of the lifestyle of being in a band."

The remaining three members of Alt-J will be joined by other musicians for their upcoming UK tour this autumn, which will visit:

Glasgow O2 Academy (September 18)

Manchester Apollo (19/ 20)

Wolverhampton Civic Hall (22)

Brighton Centre (23)
