Snowbombing 2018: Things to do at the festival

Snowbombing is a five-day music festival that delivers music with a massive helping of snow.

Set in the Alps in one of Austria’s most famous ski resorts, Mayrhofen, its appeal lies in its eclecticism: nestled in the mountains, ravers can party hard to a mix of electronica, indie rock and genres in between.

Liam Gallaghar is headlining, and partygoers will also find Dizzie Rascal as well as Craig David's legendary TS5 set - to name but a few of the many acts which will be heating up the festival.

But it’s not just music on offer - revellers can take up skiing in between live music sets, lounge in spas and saunas and enjoy the town.

Now in its 19th year, Snowbombing 2018 is set to be a monster of a ride. For those of you not sure where to begin, here are a few things you should try to check out while you're there.

Try out the snow sports

Whether you’re a seasoned skier or simply wish to dip your toe into the world of snow sports, Snowbombing has you covered: You can hire a ski or a board and hit the slopes with friends, or book yourself in for a lesson beforehand.

With over 650km of piste, blue runs, red runs and Europe’s steepest incline - aptly named the Harikari - Mayrhofen is perfect for beginners and experts alike.

Take a break in the spas

Snowbombing is unique not only for its snow sports but also its commitment to relaxation: Festival goers wishing to take a break from the snow can sink into the warm waters of a Moroccan-style pool, or relax in a hot tub overlooking the Austrian mountains. And for those really craving the heat, there are 17 different types of saunas to choose from.

Go to the parties

Snowbombing is well known for its parties: often set in unique and interesting places, they’re somewhat of a cult requirement for Snowbombers. The theme for this year’s fancy dress outdoor street party - the largest in Europe - is Musical Heroes, so be sure to pack your Hendrix pants and Slash wig (or in the writer’s case, let my hair roam wild). There’s also the Forest Stage, hosting some of the biggest acts, as well as Smirnoff’s Arctic Disco (in an igloo!). In fact, one of Rudimentary’s favourite memories of the festival is “playing in an igloo”.

There’s also Fun Haus, a strange Bavarian beer garden that hosts covers, bingo, and musical quizzes - all in a traditional Austrian aesthetic.

Electronica duo Waze & Odyssey met at a Snowbombing festival and have been performing there regularly. The place is special to them.

Speaking to The Independent, they have some tips to make sure you have the best time:

“Get in training, it’s a slog to hit the mountains and the party too. Pace yourselves - it’s a whole week of madness. Also, make sure you eat breakfast, lunch and dinner at Hans.

“It’s a great festival and we have been going for years. The views are amazing up the mountains and it really helps the hangovers”.

Prices start from £249 for five night's accommodation and a week-long festival ticket, with the option to extend your stay to eight nights.
