Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Indie band Deerhunter moves into first position as the most popular act in the blogs according to The Hype Machine on October 1, with rapper Kanye West falling into second place. New in the day's top ten: Los Angeles noise-pop bands No Age and Local Natives, and French pop outfit Yelle.
No Age formed in 2005 and is known for both its DIY ethic and its ties to the Los Angeles underground music scene. The duo has made two full-length studios albums, the second of which was released on Sub Pop Records, and a third, Everything in Between, was just released on September 28. "By dissecting influences like My Bloody Valentine, The Ramones and 'everything in between' the band creates melody-driven pop songs with a DIY punk ethos underneath all of the fuzzy distortion and experimental noise," reviews blogger Atlas and the Anchor (atlasandtheanchor.blogspot.com).
Local Natives is Los Angeles indie band that began attracting widespread attention after performing nine shows at the 2009 South by Southwest Festival, then following the international release of its debut album Gorilla Manor in February. The band is back in the blogs after recently releasing a video for "Wide Eyes" from the LP on Pitchfork. "The opening track on Silver Lake favorites Local Natives' Gorilla Manor gets a David Lynch-y video treatment featuring a love story, a pool party, a dude in a shark costume and a violent conclusion worthy of Piranha 3D," writes Brand X (www.thisisbrandx.com). "Wide eyes, indeed."
