American electronic rock band LCD Soundsystem are reportedly set to reunite.

The band, which have a huge cult following, split four years ago after making three critically acclaimed albums: LCD Soundsystem, Sound of Silver and This is Happening.

The final album included the single Drunk Girls, for which the video - seen below - was directed by acclaimed Being John Malkovich director Spike Jonze.

Confirming the split on their website, the band said in a statement: "we are retiring from the game. gettin’ out. movin’ on."

James Murphy, the band’s frontman, said at the time that the band was not “sustainable”, and he had become exhausted by touring.

LCD Soundsystem said farewell to their fans at a concert at the prestigious Madison Square Garden arena in New York in 2011, attended by 20,000 people.

That concert was then turned into a documentary, Shut Up and Play the Hits, about the band’s ten-year-long career.

Multiple sources have reportedly told the Consequence of Sound music news website that the band will return in 2016.

The website claimed LCD Soundsystem will headline three music festivals in the US and the UK.

DFA, the band’s record label, did not confirm the report. The Consequence of Sound publsihed an image of the record label sharing their article of the report on Twitter, which has since been removed.

The Independent has contacted DFA Records for a comment.
