Glastonbury weather forecast: Met Office share official advice for festival-goers

After a few years of beautiful sunny weekends in Somerset, will the weather hold out for Glastonbury 2024?

The Met Office has told Glastonbury 2024 festival-goers to pack both wellies and suncream for this year’s event, as it forecasts “plenty of sunshine” but also the chance of thunderstorms as revellers flock to Worthy Farm in Somerset.

The last two years have seen festival-goers blessed with remarkably sunny weekends in Somerset.

Previous years haven’t been so lucky, with 2016’s edition experiencing flash floods in the area the week before the festival, creating a distinctly muddy landscape that fans had to navigate around.

Dan Rudman, Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist, said: “After a brief, less settled interlude today and tomorrow, fine conditions will return by Sunday and into the beginning of next week. For much of the UK this will be accompanied by a boost in temperatures with many places reaching the mid-20°Cs.

“Some central and southern areas are likely to see temperatures approaching the values needed for heatwave conditions. Heatwave conditions need to remain in situ for three consecutive days, and by the beginning to middle of next week it is possible that some parts of the UK could be reaching heatwave thresholds.

“However, whether or not everyone experiences heatwave thresholds, the majority of the UK will experience the highest temperatures so far this year.”

The Met Office said that, while temperatures could reach a peak on Wednesday, things could turn more unsettled and lead to some heavy showers or thunderstorms in places, “with the most persistent rain likely in the west or southwest”.

“Confidence in the forecast reduces markedly from Wednesday onwards, with uncertainty in both how long the heat will last and how it will break down, which we will be keeping an eye on for the coming days. However, by next weekend, cooler, changeable conditions become more likely,” Rudman said.

This year’s festival is being headlined by Dua Lipa, Coldplay and SZA, with country-pop star Shania Twain taking on the coveted Sunday Legends Slot.

Other artists on the lineup include Avril Lavigne, Cyndi Lauper, Little Simz, Seventeen, Idles, The Last Dinner Party, Camila Cabello, Burna Boy, London Grammar, PJ Harvey, Janelle Monae, Fat White Family, Sugababes, Fatboy Slim, Michael Kiwanuka, Bloc Party, Two Door Cinema Club, Jessie Ware and Paloma Faith.

There are also several “TBC” slots booked across the weekend, marking the secret sets that will be revealed as the festival gets underway.
