Their Satanic Majesties Request was a departure from the band's roots in rhythm & blues and divided critics and fans alike, who saw it as an attempt by the band to align themselves with the psychedelic movement of the 1960s.
"2000 Light Years From Home", however, was regarded as a highlight, and is often ranked as one of the top songs from the band's extensive catalogue. Many critics have since argued in the album's defence and encouraged fans to give it another chance.

Abkco is releasing its 50th anniversary boxed set of Their Satanic Majesties Request on 22 September.
Grammy award winning music historian Rob Bowman writes in the liner notes for the new edition: “Their Satanic Majesties Request should be recognised as an important stepping stone in the Rolling Stones’ development from an R&B-inspired band to the inventors of modern rock for the 1970s."
