Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Q&A with R. LUM. R

What are you listening to at the moment?

There's a few new records this year that I'm into: I just discovered MUNA and I'm really feeling them. Also The National has a new record that's pretty adventurous for them. My friend put me on to Smerz and the new King Krule, which is cool. But my most listened to recently is probably the new Odesza record!

What are your plans for the rest of 2017?

I will be doing a lot of writing, on and off the road. My aim is to have a bunch of new songs to be able to play on tour! I will be back out on the road in November and December.

What was the first gig you ever played and what’s been the best so far?

The first show time I EVER performed in front of anyone I was 9 I think, and it was in my grandmother's choir. I had a solo and even though I was prepared I got really nervous and ended up throwing up at the mic. Haha it was pretty bad.

My best show is a hard one to answer because I feel like they keep getting better and better, as crowds become more acquainted with me and vice versa. It's honestly still a crazy feeling hearing someone singing back your lyrics with sometimes more passion than even you can.

I definitely felt that at Austin City Limits Festival recently, where there was probably a crowd of 3,000 or so, but I've also felt that in more intimate venues like Larimer Lounge in Denver or The Constellation Room in Santa Ana. So, I guess what I'm saying is the best shows are the ones we feel the most connected to each other.
