Music Box #22: Exit Kid

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Exit Kid is the project of Years & Years keyboardist Emre Türkmen, who decided to switch synths for guitar, teaming up with drummer Dylan Bell.

"Exit Kid began in Albuquerque a year ago. I was on a gruelling US tour and it was very monotonous and uninspiring," Emre explained.

"There's a line in a Verve song that always stuck with me: “the airwaves are clean and there's nobody singing to me now” and that's how I felt. Plus, I had a lot of shit to deal with so I bought a cheap guitar and decided to get my hands dirty. I don't think the guitar-bass-drums combo has ever been bettered."

The guys released their debut, self-titled EP in June, played a few shows, and then we hauled them in for a Music Box session.

This was the first time we'd had a full drum kit in but thankfully it fit, and it was pretty good exercise carrying everything into the studio.

Check out their session (above) - the guys played "Who You Fooling" and "Working Stiff".
