Whether you know him as Major Tom, Ziggy Stardust or Aladdin Sane, Bowie’s impact on music, fashion and film has been immeasurable.
News of his death has devastated fans worldwide with many sharing their favourite Bowie songs on social media, including his last public performance – unbelievably, from a decade ago.
He last performed alongside Alicia Keys in November 2006 at a fundraising event in New York’s Hammersmith Ballroom.
The pair sung the iconic hit, Changes, with Bowie putting on an effortlessly classy performance.
The set which also included Wild is the Wind and Fantastic Voyage would become his last public performance after his agent announced in October 2015 he would “never tour again”.
Bowie’s public appearances became infrequent following a heart attack in 2004.
His final album, Blackstar, was released two days ago to mark his 69th birthday; and the record will now take on a new meaning with his passing.
Bowie's son Duncan Jones, confirmed the news while a statement was also issued on his various social media accounts.
"David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18-month battle with cancer”.
"While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family's privacy during their time of grief."
