From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Florence Welch, lead singer of Florence and the Machine, has revealed she broke her foot while “leaping off the stage” at Coachella.

The 28-year-old British singer had been skipping across the stage in a white ‘70s inspired trouser suit and previewing songs from her next album, How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful, before she came a cropper.

During her performance she repeatedly leaped offstage to join revellers in the crowd at the arts festival held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California - but apparently she leapt too enthusiastically.

The performer revealed on her Facebook page that she is “devastated” by her injury.

The band has just been named among this year’s Glastonbury lineup and Welch insists that she should be “back on [her] feet” by the time the Somerset festival takes place in June.

Welch has not cancelled any scheduled appearances but has apologised to fans warning that while she heals her performances “will have to be somewhat stripped back”.

She also remarked on the irony of her injury considering her new album was “so much about making something from what was broken,” stoically adding “so let’s see what we can do with this.”

Florence Welch statement in full:

Hi everyone,

I'm so sorry to say, that after what was one of my favourite shows ever at Coachella, I have discovered I have broken my foot from leaping off the stage.

Unfortunately while this heals, my performances will have to be somewhat stripped back.

I'm so sorry, I'm pretty devastated, but I still want to do the shows.

I understand this is not what you were expecting, but I hope its just as enjoyable. I'm going to try and make it super special for you.

By the time Glastonbury rolls around I should be back on my feet.

This album was so much about making something from what was broken, so let’s see what we can do with this.

All my love, Florence.
