Sir: Whether surtitles or subtitles are used is a matter for debate ("Opera chief backs displaying words for audience", 20 November). However, it is worth noting that there are millions of people who enjoy music but, through hearing impairment, cannot discern words. They would benefit enormously from the availability of some form of text transcription in opera houses.
